Extract the GPS data from your Sony Handycam

Since I bought the Sony HD XR520 last May, I have always wondered about retrieving the raw GPS data that is recorded when you capture footage. A lot of the new Sony models record GPS points now and I have looked online with not much luck on how to retrieve this raw data. Turns out it is really very simple. The software you receive with your Sony camera, Picture Motion Browser (PMB) has a very nice map feature, which displays your selected videos on the map and gives you the option to export that data to an xml (KML) file to be imported into Google Earth.

So there are many visualisations you could achieve with this xml data. In the coming posts I will import this into flash and create a flash map of my own to display and play the videos taken from the camera.

  1. Hi, I have a problem similar to this, but what I need is to extract all the GPS data of a video footage, not just the first point.
If I record a video while I’m moving, gps data is recorded on the video footage while I’m moving, I can see the diferent coordenats in the video if I watch it on the câmera, but when I export the video to the computer I only have access to the first point… do you now how to solve this??

  2. Have not been able to do that myself. Are you using a XR520? I was under the impression it only recorded the starting point on the XR520.

  3. Hi !
I’m looking for the same thing. In fact, the camcorder is recording a set of data along the video : GPS location, WB, Aperture, Gain… I’ve found no software able to retreive them in order to use them or simply display them, although the camcorder is able to do that (with remote, push data code while playing).

Little Tern Series

I arrived at one of the best wetlands areas in Australia not long ago and was given a brilliant display of acrobatics from the amazing Little Terns that feed in the area. I managed to capture a series of images but ultimately decided on two images that i liked best. Here are those two images and the near frames that I was also considering.
