The Power of Social Media in Natural Disasters

The Power of Social Media in Natural Disasters

In the previous days to this post, Queensland (Australia) and specific areas like Ipswich, Toowoomba and Brisbane have suffered catastrophic flooding. Flooding that was only previously seen almost 40 years earlier. The flash floods followed by the riverine flooding with water rising to almost 5 metres above the normal river level has left these cities and residents devastated. Houses, businesses and lives have been lost and it’s a tragic event on the largest possible scale. Are you Engaged?

Are you Engaged?

Building a web presence and engaging with your clients has never been easier. I’ll discuss a few options here to help you get over any fears you might have with getting your business online. For anybody who is hesitant about breaking into the online market, it can be a daunting prospect.

It’s a natural human trait to be fearful of something new and things we generally don’t understand we like to avoid at all costs, especially if it’s risking income. A general reaction is “What can go wrong?” or “What if I put up a site and it fails?. It’s only natural to ask these question and more, I know, I’ve reacted the same way when trying new things and taking risks. The truth is, as the internet evolves the hurdles and the barriers continue to fall. Starting the most simplest web presence has come a long way since the days of the .com boom and subsequent bust. With the advent of web 2.0 and social media, internet traffic and opportunities are growing side by side exponentially. So if you’re sitting on the fence regarding your decision to get yourself online, then leap off the fence and just do it. I like to tell clients the worst thing you can do is “nothing at all”. Whether it’s setting up a simple blog page or creating a facebook fan page for your business, or starting a twitter account to communicate with your customers, it’s the simple things that count, and they all have one thing in common, they help you “engage” with your clients.

Let me just run through some of the more simple aspects of creating an online presence, this will hopefully break down the barriers and allow you to jump over those hurdles that have been in your way for a little while now.

Little Tern Series

I arrived at one of the best wetlands areas in Australia not long ago and was given a brilliant display of acrobatics from the amazing Little Terns that feed in the area. I managed to capture a series of images but ultimately decided on two images that i liked best. Here are those two images and the near frames that I was also considering.
